LIGHT

The purpose of this project is to analyze and study the behavior of light throughout the day and throughout the year using different shapes and figures to control natural light. A proposed non-denominational chapel must be built in Farmingdale State College and must be integrated into the fabric of the campus.

Narrative & Location

The new chapel in Farmingdale State College would be located across from the Cutler Hall. This is a great spot for the new Chapel because it is convenient for the students who live on Campus- transferred students who need comfort and familiarity in a new environment; for students who simply need to get away from the noise and stress from school. This is spot is also close to administration buildings, the student/staff parking lot, and it is next to the secondary pedestrian circulation.

The new chapel is defined by the parking lot strip and the secondary pedestrian path. It will be a two-story student life structure. The main sanctuary will be a two-story space. The frontal view of the chapel would be facing North, so during the day, natural light will illuminate the two-story space chapel as the sun rises from the east and sets to the west. The main sanctuary would be located in the back of the church since there are no buildings blocking it from the sun. According to the sun diagrams, the back of the church would still be illuminated throughout the year due to the sun’s angle as it rises and sets in the sky.
